Warriors Complete Remarkable Upset Run To Section 9, Class A Title

MIDDLETOWN – The countdown was on – 3 (seed), 2 (seed), 1 (seed).

The Minisink Valley High School girls soccer team capped a remarkable run of upsets in the Section 9, Class A tournament on Monday, as the sixth-seeded Warriors beat No. 1 Red Hook, 2-1, in the championship game at Faller Field in Middletown.

That completed a sweep of the top three seeds that began with last week’s win over No. 3 Wallkill in the quarterfinals followed by a victory over No. 2 Warwick in the semifinals.

It was a heartbreaking end to the season for the Raiders, who came into the game at a perfect 18-0.

It was Hennig who scored Red Hook’s only goal, cutting the deficit to 2-1 albeit with under eight minutes to play. By that time, Minisink’s Kassie Ryder had stunned with two quick goals – one at the 48-minute mark followed by another at 50 minutes.

Ironically, it was almost a similar situation to last year’s tournament when Minisink Valley was also seeded sixth and fashioned an upset win over No. 3 Red Hook in the quarterfinals.

But this time, the Warriors finished it off with the sectional crown.

Minisink Valley earns a bye in the first round of the state tournament and will play a regional final/state quarterfinal game on Saturday against the winner of the Pearl River-Section 4 champion game on Wednesday.
