Resilient Admirals’ Baseball Beats Horseheads, Earn Regional Final Shot vs. Kingston

ENDWELL – Jon Iula has enough baseball savvy to know exactly what he needed to do.

Bat, meet ball.

“I knew I had to put something in play and hit it hard,” Iula said after his sacrifice fly in the top of the eighth inning on Thursday afternoon plated the winning run, as Arlington High School beat Horseheads, 4-3, in a New York State Class AA Regional Semifinal.

The Admirals will take on Hudson Valley rival Kingston on Saturday at Pace University at 5 p.m. in the regional final. The winner advances to the New York State Public High School Athletic Association Final Four.

Resilient Arlington won it despite losing a 3-1 lead when Horseheads got a solo home run in the bottom of the sixth inning and an RBI triple in the bottom of the seventh to tie it. But where the Admirals could have hung their heads, they instead hung the winning run on the scoreboard.

Austin Zakow led off the top of the eighth with a walk and stole second. After an out, the patient Admirals drew two more walks to load the bases.

Up stepped Iula.

“I got an inside fastball that I was able to drive deep enough into left field,” Iula said.

Zakow scored, and then it was up to Matt McGowan to close it out in relief of Kevin Besko in the bottom of the inning.

Here’s the final out:
