ARLINGTON GIRLS DRAW FIRST BLOOD

Admirals Beat Rival Mahopac To Start The Soccer Season

FREEDOM PLAINS – When last we left the Arlington High School girls soccer team, the Admirals were gunning for a fourth straight Section 1, Class AA championship and another trip to the state tournament.

Then Mahopac stepped in and said ‘Hold our root beer.’

The fourth-seeded Indians stunned No. 1 Arlington in the 2019 semifinals to earn a berth in the sectional title game and end the Admirals’ season.

So, as fate – and 2020 – would have it, the two schools opened the new campaign a year later by facing off in their respective season openers, and it was Arlington which drew first blood with a 4-1 victory at home on Wednesday.

The Admirals dominated the match and welcomed back Kaylee Stowell from a pair of injuries that kept her off the field last year. Stowell had the season’s first goal, then assisted on the second – to her sister Casey – to help the Admirals forge an early 2-0 lead that settled at 3-0 at the half on an unassisted tally by Ava Allen.

Piper Klammer slowed the tie with a Mahopac goal in the second half assisted by Hailey Pereira, but Arlington got it right back on an own goal with the credit going to Jenna Jedlicka.
