Admirals Take League Matchup With Mahopac

MAHOPAC – Some of the luster was taken off the highly anticipated girls soccer showdown between Arlington and Mahopac high schools on Saturday when Mahopac lost twice last week.

What was once a matchup between the No. 4 and 6 teams in the state in Class AA became a game between the No. 2 Admirals and the suddenly unranked Indians.

And Arlington showed why it ascended to the runnerup spot in the poll.

Sidney Cannan had two goals and Sofia Germano had three assists, leading the Admirals to a 5-2 win at Mahopac.

Arlington is 9-0-1 overall and is 37-1-1 in its last 39 games dating back to the 2016 state title season. The Indians dropped to 5-3.

Arlington coach Kelley Hand said her team came out strong with controlled the game by playing smart possession soccer. Cannan scored early off of a through-ball from Germano as she placed it in the low corner.

Kelly Coster quickly put another one in from an assist from Kendall Feighan to make it 2-0 at the half, and Cannan scored the third goal when Feighan dribbled through defenders and took a shot that was stopped, but rebounded right to Cannan for the goal.

Mahopac star Carly Steinberg then took over, scoring on a penalty kick and then on a beautiful header from a corner kick by Hailey make it a 3-2 game.

But Arlington quickly answered back when Germano fed Jenna Jedlicka for a shot that soared over the keeper’s head to make it 4-2, and Germano got her third assists of the day when she found Casey Stowell and sealed the game with a goal.
