Mahopac Softball Pitcher Fans 17, Including Her 800th

MAHOPAC – When you start talking about the best, most dominant players in Section 1 high school athletics, Shannon Becker best be a big part of the conversation.

Becker, the senior Mahopac High School softball pitcher, is must-see every time she steps on the mound – as she was on Thursday afternoon.

The Notre Dame commit struck out 17 batters, including the 800th of her career in a 3-0 league win over Arlington.

Becker now has 813 for her career, even with missing all of the 2020 season because of the coronavirus pandemic.

“I knew I was close but I didn’t know how close I was, so I was surprised,” Becker said of her milestone strikeout. “It was the third out of the inning so we came off the field and they did a little celebration. It was a great feeling.”

Indians coach Cristina Giansante said catcher Michele DellaMura played a big role in the win.

“Becker was on point tonight and DellaMura was calling an absolute beauty of a game,” Giansante said. “Arlington is a solid team but our defense hung in there and got the outs when it mattered, and did not fold under pressure. Our bats took a little while to wake up today as we didn’t add the two insurance runs on until the 6th, but that sometimes happens.”

DellaMura, Gianna Lafaro and Lauren Zecca all had RBI hits for ‘Pac.

“We’re off to a great start so far this year so I’m feeling pretty good,” Becker said. “ I can’t wait to see what we will accomplish.”
