Bulldogs Join Section 9 And Beat Kingston

BEACON – The Beacon High School girls soccer team made a loud debut in Section 9, winning its season opener on Friday with a 2-1 victory over Kingston.

Though the two teams are in different leagues and different classes – Kingston is AA, Beacon is A – it was an impressive win for the Bulldogs.

Freshman Rory LaDue had the game-winner, converting what coach Huge Alzate called “a lovely gift pass” from Reilly Landisi to snap a 1-1 tie with just 59 seconds left in the game.

Landisi, also a freshman, scored the Bulldogs’ first goal.

“We are a very young squad with few upperclassman, but we competed pretty well last season with six starters being in either eighth or ninth grade,” said Alzate, whose team went 7-6 last year. “Our top scorers have all returned so we’d like to think that we should score some more goals this season but with the move to Section 9 it’s all up in the air on realistic expectations. I don’t know what to really expect. Some of those squads are pretty tough. I just know that our girls are going to try and compete in every game. Our goal would be the same as it has always been – win a postseason game and hopefully more.”

Beacon started competing in Section 9 starting this season.

In the Kingston win, Alzate said defense from his squad of Emma Campagiorni, Lindsay Otero, Gabby Kuka, Sara Gonzalez and newcomer Noelle Haase in her first varsity game was a huge key.

Hope Cleveringa had 10 saves including a couple of huge ones that kept the game tied. Devyn Kelly closed out the game in goal with a save of her own.
