All Four Local Teams Are Ousted From State Basketball Tourney

VESTAL – Well, didn’t see that coming.

Even the odds suggested against it, with so many local high school boys basketball teams still alive.

But all four remaining teams – all from Section 9, since Section 1 didn’t produce any champions from the HVSR coverage area – went down to defeat on Wednesday in the state regional semifinals.

In Class AA, Newburgh was playing at home but Section 1 champion Horace Greeley made itself comfortable in the empty gym. The game was tight throughout and looked as though it would come down to a last possession. It did. Greeley’s Chris Melis drilled a jumper from the top of the key just inside the three-point line, giving Greeley a 50-48 win over the Goldbacks.

In Class A, New Paltz played on the road against Johnson City at neutral Vestal High School, and the Huguenots were within seven after three quarters – usually a good position for a team that has made a habit out of fourth quarter and overtime comebacks. But New Paltz couldn’t come all the way back and fell to JC, 76-70.

In Class B, Marlboro, playing at home, had all the momentum entering the final quarter. The Iron Dukes pulled away from a 24-22 advantage at halftime to take a 38-31 lead into the final quarter. But Hastings had a phenomenal final frame, outscoring Marlboro 19-10 for a 48-45 victory. Max Schapiro’s three-pointer with just over two minutes remaining gave Hastings the lead for good.

And in Class C, Pine Plains was helpless as host Alexander Hamilton scored 20 of the game’s first 22 points en route to an 83-46 victory that ended the Bombers’ season. Zach Funk dropped five three-pointers and scored 17 points for Pine Plains, but it wasn’t enough. Hamilton’s

Brandon Harris led the Red Raiders with a double-double, 26 points and 11 rebounds, while teammate Jourdan Belcher also went double-double with 20 and 13.
