BLACK WEDNESDAY FOR BOYS SOCCER

Last Three Local Teams Eliminated From Section 1 Tournament

OSSINING – If the upper Hudson Valley is to have a high school boys soccer state champion, it will have to come from Section 9.

All three remaining teams in the HVSR coverage area competing in the Section 1 tournament were eliminated on Wednesday, scoring just one goal among the trio of squads.

In Section 1, Class AA, both Arlington and John Jay lost semifinal games on the road. The Admirals, seeded fifth, fell behind No. 1 Ossining early, and couldn’t get the equalizer in a 2-1 loss.

Ossining is making its second straight trip to Saturday’s sectional final after being upset by Ketcham last year. The Pride received goals by J.P. Estupinan and Kevon Evans early in the game and held off the Admirals after Kamran Payman scored in the second half to cut the deficit in half.

Arlington finishes the season at 13-6.

“A tough one to swallow for us,” Admirals coach Craig Sanborn said. “We gave up two re-start goals early.  This has been one of our difficulties all year.  We came out in the second half and really took control to get ourselves back in it.  Unfortunately we were not able to get the equalizer.  The boys played extremely hard and I am very proud of the effort.  We never gave up and battled right to the end.”

The Pride will face Mamaroneck at 5:30 p.m. Saturday at Lakeland High School. Second-seeded Mamaroneck was a 1-0 winner over No. 3 John Jay after Matt Giraldo headed in a corner kick for the only goal of the game.

In Class C, fourth-seeded Haldane was eliminated by No. 1 Alexander Hamilton, 2-0.

Hamilton plays The Leffell School Saturday at Lakeland High School at 8 p.m. for the championship.
