Pine Plains Stuns Millbrook For Sectional Title

MIDDLETOWN – To end up playing for the Section 9, Class C high school boys basketball championship after the way it started the season was practically unthinkable for Pine Plains six weeks ago.

At that point in the season, the Bombers were 3-7 and had just lost to Millbrook by more than 20 points.

To actually go ahead and win the sectional title? Well that just became dream-come-true kind of stuff.

Pine Plains came all the way back from its rough start and did it, beating archrival Millbrook 44-42 on Thursday night for its first Section 9 title since 2013.

The Bombers will play the Section 1 champion in a state regional game on Tuesday.

It was the first boys championship for head coach Les Funk, who certainly is no stranger to success having taken two Pine Plains girls basketball teams and three softball teams to the state Final Four.

Funk might not have seen a sectional title coming for the boys, but he knew this was a different team from the first half of the season.

“It’s a credit to how hard this team has worked and how they have come together as a team,” he said. “We were not a very good basketball team the first half of season. These guys figured it out and are playing with intensity and most importantly playing as a team.”

The Bombers’ win, which included surviving a last-second driving layup attempt by Liam Flaherty, stopped a streak of three straight sectional titles by the Blazers.

“After that second Millbrook game where we lost by about 25 we all got together and said how things need to change,” said Pine Plains’ Adam Funk, who along with his brother Tyler scored 12 points each. “After that game we went on a crazy winning streak, beating Red Hook, and all these good teams and we had confidence going into this game. We stuck together as a team.”

It was Adam Funk who drilled a huge three-pointer that started a 9-0 run right after Millbrook had taken its first lead of the game at 37-35 midway through the final quarter.

Leading 44-37, Pine Plains hung on down the stretch.

Zach Funk and Calab McCaul had eight points each for the Bombers. Isaiah Edmunds of Millbrook led all scorers with 17 points.

“This section championship means a lot to us because they have knocked us out the last couple years, so it was our year to return the favor,” Adam Funk said. “It’s a great team win and hopefully we can keep this going.”
