Carmel’s Katie Turk, New Paltz’s Riley Brutvan, O’Neill’s Harry Marson Take Individual Titles

BREWSTER – The Brewster High School Cross Country Invitational has long been a meet that brings out the best in teams and individuals.

Saturday was no exception.

The annual event produced a plethora of local team and individual champions on a gorgeous morning in Putnam County.

The two key races were the Girls Varsity I and Girls Varsity II. The hosts took the Varsity I team title as Brewster won a thriller, totaling 40 points to edge John Jay (42) and Carmel (49). Our Lady of Lourdes placed fifth.

Carmel sensation Katie Turk was the overall winner, covering the 3.1-mile course in a time of 18 minutes, 17.3 seconds. She topped Elsa Newbauer of Brewster by 33.2 seconds to take the Varsity I and overall individual title.

Marissa Crowley of Brewster was fifth, Emily Alps of Carmel was sixth, New Paltz’s Claire Holt placed seventh and Amelie Guzman led John Jay’s runners by finishing eighth.

In the Girls Varsity II meet, O’Neill took the team title with 79 points, 11 points ahead of runnerup Valley Central.  Newburgh placed fifth, Pine Bush was 10th, Millbrook 11th, Eldred 12th and Fallsburg was 13th.

Individually, O’Neill’s Leah Richardson placed second in the race in a time of 18:52.1 behind winner Ava Jolley of North Salem, who covered the course in 18:19.7. Valley Central’s Kelly O’Conner was fourth, Alondra Cruz-Delgado of Newburgh was eighth, and Kelly Conan of VC was 10th.

Like the girls, the boys also had a Boys Varsity I and Varsity II race.

John Jay overpowered the 15-team field to win the Boys Varsity I race with 56 points. Brewster was second (78), Carmel was third (91) and New Paltz was fifth (107). Mahopac, Our Lady of Lourdes and Red Hook finished sixth, seventh and eighth, respectively.

New Paltz’s Riley Brutvan led the pack of runners in the V-I race by placing first in a time of 15:47.2, edging Mark Rogers of Briarclliff, who placed second in a time of 15:53.8. Patrick Cullen of John Jay was third, Brewster freshman Patrick Ford was sixth, Jay’s Aidan Milroy was seventh, Zach Martin of Crmel was eighth, and Brewster teammates Ryan Neubauer and Finn Ratajack rounded out the top 10.

In the Varsity II contest, Oneill finished in third place in the team standings. Newburgh was seventh, Pine Bush was 10th and Fallsburg 14th.

O’Neill’s Harry Marson won the V-II meet in a time of 15:53.4, more than 10 seconds ahead of James Gallagher of Regis. Valley Central’s John Zavala and O’Neill’s Luke Schools placed sixth and seventh, respectively.
