BURKE ENDS SPACKENKILL’S UPSET BID

Eagles Beat Spartans For Section 9, Class B Boys Soccer Title

MIDDLETOWN – This wasn’t the year for the Spackenkill High School boys soccer team.

It was a year early for a squad with a strong young nucleus of talent, that’s all.

Instead of completing a stunning string of upsets, the seventh-seeded Spartans fell to No. 1 John S. Burke, 6-2, in the Section 9, Class B title game at Faller Field on Saturday.

The Eagles move on to the state tournament.

The Spartans’ season is over but not before taking No. 2 O’Neill and No. 3 Highland with them prior to Saturday’s loss. Jake Spero and Marco Mazzarelli each scored a goal for the Spartans.

For Burke, Ryan Manna had two goals and three assists – and then stayed right at Faller Field to play in the football team’s eventual loss to Port Jervis – and Chris Shust also had two goals.
