COLLEGE SOFTBALL: Army upsets No. 1 seed Lehigh in Patriot League tourney opener

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Freshman Marah House doubled in the tie-breaking run and scored on an error as Army exploded for four runs in the top of the ninth to snap a 1-1 tie, and the fourth-seeded Black Knights defeated top-seeded Lehigh, 5-1, in the opening round of the Patriot League Tournament Thursday.

army softFreshman right-hander Caroline Smith, a second-team all-league selection , retired the side in the bottom of the ninth in going the distance on a six hitter, walked three and struck out four to improve to 13-11.

Smith helped her own cause driving in the first run of the game on an RBI groundout in the top of the second. She held Lehigh (30-19) off the scoreboard until the bottom of the sixth when John Jay graduate Vicky Lattanzio’s RBI single tied the game 1-1. Smith denied the Mountain Hawks, who had two hits in that inning, as Army turned a double play.

Army snapped the 1-1 tie pounding out six hits for four runs off Patriot League Pitcher of the Year Emily Bausher (13-7) in the tie-breaking ninth.

Amanda Nguyen and Alee Rashenskas each drove in a run to close out the scoring in that inning as the defending Patriot League Tournament champion Black Knights won their third straight opening game.

It is just the second time that the Black Knights defeated the Mountain Hawks in the opening round in six tries, the last a 7-4 decision in 2001.

Army will play the winner No. 2 Boston University this morning.
