CORNWALL SHINES AT DAN PURDY INVITATIONAL

Dragons Win Boys And Girls Team Titles

PAWLING – Cornwall High School’s girls cross country team had seven runners in the top 18 finishers on Saturday, as the Dragons won the team title at the prestigious Dan Purdy Invitational held at Pawling High School.

Cornwall tallied 47 points to pace the 12-team field. Dobbs Ferry, John Jay-Cross River, Brewster, Hendrick Hudson, John Jay-East Fishkill, Fox Lane, Lakeland/Panas, Our Lady of Lourdes and Pawling rounded out the top 10.

Cornwall’s boys team was also victorious, outdueling runnerup John Jay-East Fishkill, 80-92, in the 15-team field. Fox Lane, Brewster, John Jay-Cross River, Fordham Prep, Pawling, Mahopac, Dobbs Ferry and Lourdes completed the top 10.

Ava Jolley of North Salem won the 5K girls event in a time of 19 minutes, 18.5 seconds, 16½ seconds better than Cornwall’s Claire Kelly who ran a strong race. Brewster’s Elsa Neubauer and Marissa Crowley were fourth and seventh, respectively, while Julia Samuelson of the Dragons finished eighth.

Cornwall also placed five straight runners between 14th and 18th that helped secure the team title.

John Jay-East Fishkill’s Isabella Hewitt and Amelia Guzmn were 21st and 22nd, respectively.

Back on the boys side, Justin Vreeland of Cornwall finished second in a time of 17:05.4, 7.2 seconds behind the winner, Eamonn Sullivan of Fordham Prep.

Noah Brightman of Pawling was third, Patrick Ford and Ryan Newbauer of Brewster went 6-7, and Aidan Milroy and Austin Cekuta of John Jay-East Fishkill were eighth and 12th, respectively. In between, Alex Petruso of Pawling placed ninth, Aidan Reilly of Lourdes was 10th and Mahopac’s Matthew McMahon placed 11th.
