Year 2 Of John Dunne Era Begins With Victory At VMI

LEXINGTON, Va. – The second-year of the coach Jon Dunne Era for the Marist College men’s basketball team began with some heroics by a first-year player.

Michael Cubbage’s pullup jumper with three seconds left was good, and the Red Foxes won their season-opener with a dramatic 58-56 road win at Virginia Military Institute on Friday night.

The significance of the victory is not lost. This is Marist’s first win in a season opener since the 2007-08 season, and the first time the Red Foxes have been over .500 since the end of the 2007-08 season – a span of more than 4,000 days.

Cubbage had tied the game at 56-all with 55 seconds left when he powered in a layup. The junior college transfer scored a game-high 19 points and added seven rebounds.

“We knew what we were going to run,” head coach John Dunne said of the game’s final play. “Our whole plan was that if we didn’t get anything out of the pick-and-roll action, then Cubbage needs to have the confidence to make it. At the end of the day, players have to make the plays and Cubbage made the right play and drilled the pull-up.”

Zion Tordoff played great on the interior, scoring 14 points and grabbing seven boards. Tyler Saint-Furcy was the other Red Fox in double-figures with 10 points. He also had three rebounds, two steals, and a block.

The Red Foxes will host their home opener at McCann Arena on Tuesday, Nov. 12 against Hartford.
