“They could be dangerous”: Webutuck boys upset Spackenkill

POUGHKEEPSIE – Whatever Webutuck High School boys soccer coach Kevin Doyle didn’t like about Thursday’s game against defending Section Nine, Class B champion Spackenkill wasn’t nearly enough to overcome what he did like.

The Warriors jumped out to a 4-0 lead and stunned the Spartans, 4-2, in a Mid-Hudson Athletic League game.

Nick Barnes and Liam Netherwhatt both scored in the first half for Webutuck, and Oscar Gomez scored twice in a four-minute span in the second half to stake the lead.

“I wasn’t happy that we gave back half the lead,” Doyle said. “I still think we can use some tightening up. But it’s a good win for us against a great program.”

Jake Kaufman and Gabe Karp scored for the Spartans, but it wasn’t enough.

“We came out flat and with no intensity and played like that until the last 10 minutes,” Spackenkill coach Manny Blanco said. “If we want to be successful we have to be ready for every game and today we weren’t. Webutuck played a great game. Their kids showed hard work the entire game. My hats off to them. If they keep playing like that they will be dangerous.”
