DEFENDING STATE CHAMPS OPEN WITH WIN

Poughkeeepsie Starts Sectional Play By Beating Beacon

POUGHKEEPSIE – It’s a different team.

That’s what Poughkeepsie High School boys basketball coach Cody Moffett and the Pioneers have said all season in the wake of last year’s New York State Class A championship.

And while that’s probably true, given the attrition of graduation, there’s still a legacy to live up to. Oh, and the fact that the 2019-2020 version of Poughkeepsie basketball is pretty darn good.

Thus, the fourth-seeded Pioneers began defense of their state title by pulling away from No. 13 Beacon in the second half, beating the Bulldogs 78-57 in the first round of the Section 1, Class A tournament.

It was the third time this season Poughkeepsie has won against Beacon, putting the Pioneers into a quarterfinal game on Wednesday against No. 5 Lakeland.

The Bulldogs were right there, trailing just 37-31 at the half and even that was only because the Pioneers’ Javel Cherry hit a three-pointer at the halftime buzzer.

But a thunderous dunk by Zaccai Curtis ignited his team and the crowd, and the Pioneers began to blow it open.
