Defense propels SUNY New Paltz field hockey to win

NEW PALTZ – The State University of New York at New Paltz field hockey team (6-4, 3-1 SUNYAC) put itself in good position to make the 2013 State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Field Hockey Championship Tournament on Wednesday, prevailing, 1-0, over SUNY Oneonta (6-4, 1-2 SUNYAC) in a league contest at the Turf Field.

Defense ruled the day, as the two teams combined for 28 shots, and there was just one goal to show for it.

On a free hit following an Oneonta green card in the 58th minute, sophomore defender Jessica Caruana ) blasted a ball from outside the circle. The ball was redirected off the goalkeeper’s pad and trickled into the goal, marking the lone marker of the contest.

Senior goalkeeper Antonija Pjetri notched the shutout with a two-save effort, while Oneonta’s Tess Tracy made 10 stops in the loss. Sierra Earle earned a defensive save for the Red Dragons.

New Paltz returns to action on Saturday, Oct. 5, taking on non-conference Richard Stockton College in Pomona, N.J.
