BREWSTER – Over the years the Brewster high school girls basketball team has been blessed with great senior leadership.

In large part that has been a by-product of the program coach Mike castaldo has built during his seven years, giving big chunks of playing time and responsibilities to his younger players as they go through the system.

This year should be no exception.

Maggie DePaoli will lead the Bears into action this season as a four-year starter and three-year team captain, and she kicked off her 2018-19 campaign with a strong game in Brewster’s 45-18 win over Beacon on Thursday.

DePaoli had 16 points, including eight in the first quarter to set the tone. Kristen Stefanick had nine points.

“It was a good opener,” Castaldo said, “but we have a lot to clean up.”

Brewster will rely heavily on DePaoli as it looks do damage in the Section 1 tournament later this winter. Last year, the Bears beat Pearl River in the first round of the playoffs and lost to John Jay-Cross River in the quarterfinals to finish up at 12 – 8.

Meagan Beal also returns in her role as a captain and forward in the starting lineup. Stefanick will be asked to shoulder some of the scoring load as well.

And true to its nature of cultivating young players, freshman Grace Galgano is back. She started as an eighth grader and made a major impact.

“We want to have a very successful year, winning more games than last year and going deeper into the playoffs,” Castaldo said. “The girls are all in on doing whatever it takes to get the job done.”
