Three Players Within Five Strokes Beats Spackenkill

POUGHKEEPSIE – Joe Nesbitt, Ike Rothman and Ryan Shaw all shot within five strokes of each other on Tuesday, leading the Franklin D. Roosevelt High School boys golf team to a slim 180-184 win over Spackenkill in a Mid-Hudson Athletic League match.

The Presidents are 9-1 overall.

The match was played at McCann Memorial Golf Course, where par is 36.

Nesbitt tied for medalist honors with Spackenkill’s Luke Whalen as each shot a 41 – the ninth time this season Whalen has earned medalist honors whether outright or tied.

But Rothman shot a 42, Shaw had a 46 and the clinching putt, and Connor Hart carded a 51. Shaw was +10 through eight holes. He needed double bogey or better on the last hole to secure the win for FDR and drained a 50-foot par putt.

For Spackenkill, Robert DeLaurentis and Rachel Curatolo both shot 47, and Oliver Katz a 49.

“It’s frustrating that we have lost three very close matches this year (by four to Roosevelt and by six and seven to Onteora),” Spartans coach Greg Allen said. “But FDR is arguably the best team in the MHAL, so it’s nice to see that we were able to compete with them. That was one of our goals this year. Compete with the best teams in the league. And we did that.”

DeLaurentis and Curatolo and both played their final home match for Spackenkill.

“These two captains carried themselves with pure class throughout their careers,” Allen said. “They have been great role models for all of our younger guys, and they still have an opportunity to make some noise at sectionals. I’m so proud of them both.”
