FIVE EARN SHOT AT STATE WRESTLING TITLES

Ryder, Robin, McGinty, Leonard And Malheiro Through To Semifinals

ALBANY – Five athletes from the Hudson Valley Sports Report coverage area are through to the semifinals and have a shot at a state title at the New York State Public High School Athletic Association championships.

The two-day meet is being held at the Times-Union Center in Albany.

There are two divisions, large school and small. Four of the five wrestlers who went unbeaten in the preliminary and quarterfinal rounds on Friday are through to the large school semifinals.

Minisink Valley’s Zach Ryder opened by recording a technical fall over Carson Alberti of Depew/Cleveland Hills in 5 minutes, 7 seconds. The seventh-grader then beat sophomore Jeremiah Echeveria of Long Beach in the quarterfinals with a fall at 4:44.

Arlington’s Dennis Robin was his usual impressive self in advancing to the semifinals. Robin posted a 10-6 decision over MacArthur’s Jake Schneider in the first round before getting a pin in 5:03 against Michael Lopresti of Spencerport in the quarterfinals.

At 152 pounds, Joey McGinty of Monroe-Woodbury won twice. The junior beat Joe Simons of Farmingdale with a pin at 4:27, and then slipped by Ty Raines of Churchville-Chili with a 10-9 decision.

Will Leonard of Cornwall earned his way into the 220-pound semifinals. The No. 1 seed captured a 4-2 decision of Nolan Thomas of St. Francis, and edged Emire Mabocoglu of Midwood by the same score.

In the small school division, Highland’s Matt Malheiro is unbeaten after beating Malachi Porter of Eagle Academy, 8-1, and then holding off No. 3 seed Mike O’Brien of Mount Sinai, 1-0. The sixth-seeded Malheiro will go for a title at 132 pounds on Saturday.
