FDR Swimmer Third In 100-Breaststroke, Cornwall Star Fifth In 200-IM


ITHACA – Franklin D. Roosevelt High School’s Catherine Graham and Cornwall’s Jessica Pryne were the local standouts Saturday at the New York State Public High School Athletic Association girls swimming and diving championships.

Graham placed third in the 100-yard breaststroke at Ithaca College, nearly pulling off the win. Her time of 1 minute, 3.35 seconds was just 1.02 seconds behind the winner of the event, Northport’s Denise Phelan.

In a span of less than 24 hours that covered Friday’s preliminaries and Saturday’s finals, Graham set and then re-set her personal record in the event to earn All-America status.

Pryne shined in two events. The Cornwall standout placed fifth in the 200-Individual Medley in a time of 2:03.56 in a highly competitive race. Port Jefferson’s Kyra Sommerstad was first in a time of 2:04.50.

Pryne was also 13th in the state in the 500-freestyle.

Highland’s Ashley Benkert swam the 100-butterfly in a time of 56.91 seconds, saving her best for last to finish 12th in the 100-butterfly.

Pine Bush’s 200-freestyle relay team of Elishka Hajek, Cora Mance, Samantha Hufcut and Antonia Licardi placed 14th.

Minisink Valley’s Madison Yager finished second in the state in the diving competition, accumulating 496 points to Alice Diakova’s 527.85 points. Diakova is from Brighton.
