Double-Double Helps Admirals Beat Lakeland

LAKELAND – Rashawn Grant dominated the inside on Thursday night, and the Arlington High School boys basketball team gave Lakeland a rude awakening in its own holiday tournament, beating the Hornets, 84-70.

Arlington will play Suffern on Saturday in the tournament finals.

The Admirals had five players in double figures, led by game-highs from Grant with 24 points and 16 rebounds.

“He has made great strides,” Arlington coach Matt Hoyt said. “He came on late last season. He was aggressive; he was bigger than their players and he took advantage of it. I think he’s ready for that big jump.”

Jack Sims contributed 14 points, nine rebounds and nine assists. Brian Habner scored 13 points and pulled down six boards. Delano Knox also had 13 points and Cory Rywalt added 11 points.

Lakeland hit 10 three-pointers in a fast-paced game that saw a combined 48 points in the first quarter alone.

“The defense wasn’t great on either side but a lot of that had to do with the tempo of the game,” Hoyt said.

Arlington cleaned it up defensively in the middle two quarters and led by 16 in the early fourth quarter. The Hornets cut it to six in the final frame but it wasn’t enough.
