Eagles Convert Late Two-Point Conversion For Win

HIGHLAND FALLS – The die was already cast.

If the John S. Burke Catholic High School football team scored a late touchdown to pull within a point of James I. O’Neill, the Eagles were going for the win and not the tie.

Brandon Tierney took care of the rest.

Tierney barreled over from the two on the two-point conversion with just over two minutes to play, giving Burke a dramatic 29-28 victory over the Raiders in the Section 9, Class B, League 2 opener for both teams.

The Eagles are now 2-1 overall, 1-0 in the league. O’Neill fell to 0-3 overall, 0-1 in league play.

“When we were on the 50 and driving, we knew what was going to happen,” Burke quarterback Jackson Hoovler told HVSR. “Our offensive line was doing a great job. And when we scored, we knew what we had to do.”

Burke coach Aaron Hasbrouck called the play, Stretch Right, and a huge hole opened for Tierney, who also scored on a reception from Hoovler.

Hoovler and Chris Leahy also had rushing touchdowns.

“It was amazing,” Hoovler said. “I couldn’t have been more proud of our guys.”

Hector Borgos scored two touchdowns for O’Neill, Josh Borowicz had a 65 yard TD run and Bryan Jones added a 13-yard scoring run.
