Blue Devils To Play For Section 1, Class C Title

COLD SPRING – Another season, another sectional championship game for Haldane High School girls soccer.

The top-seeded Blue Devils were completely dominant on Thursday, scoring early and often and then using its defense to shut out No. 4 Alexander Hamilton, 6-0, in a Section 1, Class C semifinal.

Haldane will play for the title on Sunday at neutral Arlington High School at 11 a.m. against The Leffell School, a 3-2 quadruple overtime winner over Tuckahoe in the other semifinal.

“It’s nice to get back to the finals,” said Haldane coach Steve Schweikhart, whose team will go for its ninth straight crown.“The girls know nothing will come easy on Sunday. Whoever we play will be fired up to take us down, so we will need to match their intensity early and play a composed 80 – or more – minutes.”

Haldane jumped out to a 1-0 lead on a goal by Chloe Rowe and then blew it open with three goals in a 16-minute span before halftime, one by Sophia Scanga and two from Jade Villella.

Bela Monteleone (two assists) and Essie Florke also scored for the Devils.

Haldane keepers Abigail Platt and Shianne Twoguns needed to make just one save each to preserve the shutout.

“We put together a good effort and pretty much controlled things from the start. Hamilton is a very young team, so I think our experience really helped us. We settled into the game pretty quickly and put together a solid game on both sides of the ball,” Schweikhart said. “We had some beautiful finishes today. The first four tallies were all absolute lasers, and Bela and Essie had really composed finishes in breakaways.”
