HIGHLAND – The moment the Highland High School volleyball team clinched a winning record for the season, everything else was gravy.

That must be the best-tasting gravy ever served, because the Huskies went above and beyond expectations.

Highland beat Spackenkill on Tuesday in four sets to clinch the first Section 9, Class B championship volleyball title in school history.

The team ended the season with a 9-4 overall record, while going 6-0 in divisional play.

“Our goal this year was to have a winning record, another accomplishment Highland has not reached in many years,” said head coach Colleen Giametta.

The team exceeded its own expectations this season, and Giametta contributes that to the determination, attitude and focus of all the girls to win and be successful, despite the difficulties that have arisen as a result of the pandemic.

Highland jumped out to an early 2-0 lead over Spackenkill, winning the first two sets 25-15 and 26-24. However, the Spartans were not going down without a fight, taking the third set 25-21 before the Huskies regained control in a 25-16 victory in the fourth set.

Olivia Bell led the way for Highland with 13 kills, 23 assists and three aces. Additionally, Jessica Gentile added 11 kills, Gabby Keeffe contributed 11 kills and three digs, and Katie

Dauenheimer chipped in six kills and three aces of her own.

“After yesterday’s epic win over powerhouse New Paltz, the girls were ready today to become champions,” said Giametta. “Each set was a battle and Spackenkill played us very hard, but in the end I knew these girls were not leaving the gym today without that sectional plaque.”

Highland will look to carry over their championship mentality into next season, and keep the winning ways rolling. The team gained a lot of valuable playoff experience this season and

has hopes that this victory is only just the beginning.
