HS ROWING: Wappingers, Poughkeepsie earn berths in finals at NYS Scholastic Rowing Championships

SARATOGA SPRINGS – Both the Wappingers and Poughkeepsie High School crew teams fared well Saturday on the first day of the New York State Scholastic Rowing Championships.

The event is being held at Fish Creek, an outlet of Saratoga Lake.

Wappingers will have three boats in Sunday’s finals, while Poughkeepsie advanced seven, including its men’s lightweight quad girls’ lightweight quad.

Wappingers will see its boys junior four, boys lightweight eight and girls junior eight compete for titles after strong showings in the time trials on Saturday.

“I was optimistic about my girls junior eight doing well,” Wappingers coach Pat Hancock said. “I told them if they hoped to do well at the state meet, they have to do well at the local level, and they won Triangulars last week by 22 seconds. That left me optimistic.”
