Well …. Not what we wanted in Week 1 but decent enough to try again.

HVSR posted a 17-8 record in the opening week of the 2018 high school football season in our elusive search for the perfect weekend of picks.

So here we are in Week 2 with our selections, including the debut of eight-man football.

FRIDAY
* BEACON AT POUGHKEEPSIE, 6 P.M. – Nice old-school matchup. Got a feeling this one will be decided less by sustained drives and more by big plays. The Pick: Beacon 30, Poughkeepsie 28

* BURKE AT NEW PALTZ, 6:30 P.M. – Ooof. Tough couple of opening games for the host Huguenots after opening with Marlboro. New Paltz acquitted itself well in the loss to the Iron Dukes. Now they have to deal with Solomon Hemingway. The Pick: Burke 24, New Paltz 22

* PAWLING AT FALLSBURG, 6:30 P.M. (8-MAN) – Fallsburg’s program is back after hiatus and Pawling has been playing an independent 11-man schedule the last few years. The Pick: Pawling 20, Fallsburg 0

* WASHINGTONVILLE AT KINGSTON, 7 P.M. – Tough losses for both teams last week, but Washingtonville was more competitive and the Tigers are still trying to figure it out. The Pick: Washingtonville 19, Kingston 8

* MONROE-WOODBURY AT PINE BUSH, 7 P.M. – Another case where both teams are coming off losses, albeit to strong programs. MW quarterback Steven Campione will be the difference. The Pick: Monroe-Woodbury 33, Pine Bush 20

* MIDDLETOWN AT NEWBURGH, 7 P.M. – Newburgh, the co-No. 1 team in the HVSR Power Rankings, looked absolutely impressive in squashing Union-Endicott last week. The Pick: Newburgh 47, Middletown 17

* WARWICK AT VALLEY CENTRAL, 7 P.M. – VC hung 55 last week. Hard to think they will again but you never know. The Pick: Valley Central 35, Warwick 10

* ROOSEVELT AT MINISINK VALLEY, 7 P.M. – No doubt that Roosevelt, manhandled by Burke last week, has the toughest September schedule around. It doesn’t get better this week. The Pick: Minisink 34, Roosevelt 12

* MARLBORO AT CORNWALL, 7 P.M. – Maybe the best game of the weekend, a challenge for both teams. The Pick: Cornwall 21, Marlboro 20

* SPACKENKILL AT PORT JERVIS, 7 P.M. – Spack Attack got surprised by Liberty last week. Won’t happen again. The Pick: Spackenkill 23, Port Jervis 16

* RED HOOK AT ELLENVILLE, 7 P.M. – Stopping Red Hook quarterback Dylan Bayliss will be a chore for Ellenville’s defense. The Pick: Red Hook 28, Ellenville 12

* O’NEILL AT MILLBROOK, 7 P.M. – Both teams coming off losses as Millbrook plays up against a Class B team once again. The Pick: O’Neill 18, Millbrook 16

* ELDRED AT SULLIVAN WEST, 7 P.M. (8-MAN): Sully gets the slight nod here as both programs debut at eight-man football. The Pick: Sullivan West 15, Eldred 12

* ROSCOE AT PINE PLAINS, 7 P.M. (8-MAN): The Bombers looked solid last year as an 11-man program and not much is going to change. The Pick: Pine Plains 27, Roscoe 7

* ARLINGTON AT CARMEL, 7 P.M. – This has the potential to be a shootout among the offenses. Last team with the ball wins. The Pick: Carmel 35, Arlington 34

* SUFFERN AT JOHN JAY, 7 P.M. – Despite their shaky quarterback situation, the Patriots are still too strong here. The Pick: John Jay 25, Suffern 14

* KETCHAM AT RAMAPO, 7 P.M. – If RCK puts in another defensive performance like it did last week, it won’t matter that this game is on the road. The Pick: Ketcham 17, Ramapo 10

* BREWSTER AT GREELEY, 7 P.M. – Nice opening win last week for the Bears, no reason it should stop now. The Pick: Brewster 17, Greeley 16

* HENDRICK HUDSON AT LOURDES, 7 P.M. – Let’s face it, these are just tuneups for OLL until the meat of the schedule hits. The Pick: Lourdes 41, Hendrick Hudson 12

* TUCKAHOE AT HALDANE, 7 P.M. – Haldane will settle into a new offense with a new quarterback to replace Brandon Twoguns, but this might not be the best opponent to start with. The Pick: Tuckahoe 22, Haldane 7

SATURDAY
* GOSHEN AT SAUGERTIES, 1:30 P.M. – Good game between two teams who started strong last week. Goshen might be a little further along at the moment. The Pick: Goshen 26, Saugerties 23

* WALLKILL AT MONTICELLO, 1:30 P.M. – Both teams were dominated by their respective opponents last week. We think this is the spot where Brian Vegliando gets the W in his return to the Panthers. The Pick: Wallkill 19, Monticello 10

* CHESTER AT LIBERTY, 1:30 P.M. – Yet another strong matchup of 1-0 teams, both coming off strong road wins. We see low-scoring. The Pick: Liberty 14, Chester 13

* RONDOUT AT DOBBS FERRY, 1:30 P.M. – Tough one on the road against a Section 1 program. The Pick: Dobbs Ferry 22, Rondout Valley 15

* DOVER AT TRI-VALLEY, 1:30 P.M. (8-MAN) – The Dragons have been progressing the last couple of years under coach Casey Lorenz as they make the switch to eight-man. The Pick: Dover 18, Tri-Valley 16

* HIGHLAND AT ONTEORA, 2 P.M. – Highland turned heads with its 50-6 win over Millbrook last week. Huskies should be 2-0 come Saturday night. The Pick: Highland 38, Onteora 12

* MAHOPAC AT NORTH ROCKLAND, 3 P.M – Rough road for both teams last week as neither scored a point. Raiders might have an edge playing at home. The Pick: North Rockland 24, Mahopac 7

* WESTLAKE AT PUTNAM VALLEY, 6 P.M. – Little bit of a surprise that Put Valley lost last week. Anger alone should help them. The Pick: Putnam Valley 20, Westlake 14
