Baseball Team Rallies From Nine Runs Down For Win

PINE BUSH – Bottom of the fifth inning, host Pine Bush High School had a 15-6 lead on visiting Roosevelt with two on, including a man on third, and two out.

So what was going through FDR coach Kory Van Zandt’s head?

“I was thinking, ‘Man, we’re just another big hit or passed ball away from them ending the game (on the 10-run mercy run),” the coach said.

That hit never came.

And the Presidents put together a rally for the ages.

FDR scored six runs in the top of the sixth inning and four more in the seventh to stun Pine Bush, 16-15, in its season opener.

“Unbelievable,” Van Zandt said. “You just had this feeling with the wind blowing it was going to be one of those days. We’ve had some pretty decent comebacks in my 11 years but nothing like this.”

The Bushmen built their lead on the strength of home runs from Zack Smith, Haakon Meland and Joseph Croce.

“I have to say, at one point we had three straight plays where we committed an error and we were just embarrassed by our play,” Van Zandt admitted.

But then FDR rallied as Marco Finocchi tied the game with a two-run single in the seventh and James Cook snuck in the go-ahead run by scoring on an errant throw to third base.

Justin Patsey came on in the seventh for the save to close it out. Finocchi got the win on the mound and finished with two hits and four RBI. Patsey finished with three hits and four RBI, including a two-run home run. Dylan Merritt was on base three times and scored three runs.
