Patriot Teams Off To Solid Start

WICCOPEE – Two for the price of one.

The John Jay High School boys and girls soccer teams opened the delayed 2020 season on Tuesday with back-to-back wins on their home turf, as the boys used a fast and furious flurry to beat Mahopac, 4-2, and the girls got a late goal for a 2-1 win over Our Lady of Lourdes.

Nick Biagini gave Mahopac a 1-0 halftime lead with a goal on a direct free kick but the second half belonged to Jay. Billy Moore tied it on a nice corner kick from Zach Rabadi, but the Indians retook the lead at 2-1 in the 64th minute on a penalty kick.

But that was short-lived.

The Patriots got goals from Matt Nansen, Rabadi and Rabadi again in the 70th, 72nd and 75th minutes to put the game away.

It was equally dramatic in the girls match.

After Jay’s Kari Horos and OLL’s Elaina Wagner traded second-half goals, Ava Viebrock decided things when she muscled in a shot with two minutes remaining in regulation for the 2-1 victory.
