JOHN JAY GIRLS START WITH WIN

Patriots Get Home Win Over Ketcham

WICCOPEE – John Jay High School put three players in double figures on Monday afternoon, and the Patriots beat Roy C. Ketcham, 61-48, in the girls basketball season opener for both teams.

Freshman Gaby Sweeney led Jay with 16 points, Ashley Buragas had 14 and Stephanie Jean-Baptiste added 13.

Cali Chiocchi tallied 14 points to pace the Indians.

“I thought it was a bit of a slow start but that was to be expected,” John Jay coach Larry Brooks said. “I  think we did a good job containing their offense. Overall, it was a good outcome.”

Jay built leads of 11-4, 32-19 and 50-28 going into the final quarter.

“We graduated five kids, three starters, and we’re young,” Brooks said. “But we’re fun to watch. We have only one senior and they play hard and they play together.”

The two teams hook up again on Wednesday.
