KETCHAM SWIM OPENS WITH VICTORY

Indians Defeat Woodlands Behind Dinardo, Vallamattam, Varon

NEWBURGH – Renay Cerrato could not have been more pleased with the season-opening meet for the Roy C. Ketcham High School girls swim team.

“There were a lot of great swims all the way around,” the coach said after the Indians beat Woodlands, 96-68, in a meet held at Mount St. Mary College. “I couldn’t be happier. Every one of them stepped up and even surprised themselves.”

RCK’s Phoebe DiNardo had a personal best in the 50-meter freestyle in 27.81 seconds, winning the event.

Annie Vallamattam stepped up to swim the 100-butterfly, not an event she normally competes in, and took second in 1 minute, 11.19 seconds and helped turn the meet around. She also won the 100-backstroke in 1:10.98.

“She’s been swimming since she’s four years old and swims competitive with a club team, so she trains for all four strokes,” Cerrato said. “It might not be her strength but she knows what to do and she said

Sophia Varon won the 100-breaststroke in 1:19.92 and also took first place in the 200-IM with a time of 2:29.10.
