Boys Open With Section 1 Road Win

MAMARONECK – Fresh off a regular season in which it rallied from an 0-5 record to a league championship, the Roy C. Ketcham High School boys basketball figured it would keep the good times rolling.

Sparked by a smothering defense, the No. 10 Indians opened the Section 1, Class AA playoffs with a mild upset, beating No. 7 Mamaroneck on the road, 43-38.

The Indians will head to No. 2 Horace Greeley on Friday night for a quarterfinal.

Brendan Cassidy and Phoenix Bowman led the way for RCk with 16 points and 12 points, respectively.

“We thought we’d be a higher seed but I was happy to be out of Arlington’s bracket,” Ketcham coach Mike Paino said with a laugh.

But after losing to Mamaroneck by 24 points in the regular season, the Indians were a different team.

“We looked at our kids this time and it was like we were looking at a different team,” Paino said. “I know it’s cliché, but these kids don’t want it to end.”

Quentin Bowman had a terrific game in leading Ketcham’s defense.

“He held their best player to nine points, all in the first half,” Paino said.

Sophomore Gabe Bristow, who had six points, held Mamaroneck’s other standout player to five points. Ketcham gave up just 23 points in the final three quarters after allowing the hosts to score 15 in the opening frame.

In fact, in the last 15 games, RCK has given up an average of just 46 points per game.
