Holy Moly! Minisink’s Alayna Savaglio Strikes Out 26 In Win

WARWICK – Goodness gracious!

Minisink Valley High School softball standout Alayna Savaglio took pitching to another level on Thursday when she put on a performance for the ages.

Savaglio set a Section 9 record with 26 strikeouts – out of 33 possible outs – as the Warriors outlasted Warwick, 2-0, in an 11-inning OCIAA game.

Ironically, it’s not a state record. Carmel’s Jasmine Ennabe struck out 28 batters in a 5-4, 13-inning win over Brewster on May 3, 2014.

And, just like in that game, Savaglio needed every one of her Ks in a tight contest. The two teams matched zeroes until MV broke through in the top of the 11th inning.

With international tiebreaker rules in effect (a runner starts each inning on second base), Alex Schoellig roped an RBI double to break the deadlock and later came around to score on a wild pitch.
