LOURDES GIRLS CLINCH LEAGUE TITLE

Tennis Team Plays Rare Sunday Doubleheader, Then Wins Again Monday

POUGHKEEPSIE – You usually don’t see too many high school athletic events on a Sunday.

Oh, you’ll catch the occasional sectional title game on a Sunday but, for the most part, a regular-season game is something of a rarity.

So what is it called when you have two events on a Sunday?

Well, for the Our Lady of Lourdes High School girls tennis team, you can call it a championship.

OLL swept two matches from Brewster on Sunday, 7-0 and 6-1, improving its record to 8-0 overall and clinching the league championship with a 5-0 mark.

The league title qualifies Lourdes for the Section 1 team tournament on October 13 and 14.

The Warriors were dominant against the Bears, even in 10-game pro sets. No. 1 singles player Gabriela Morris split her two matches with Brewster’s eighth-grade tennis prodigy, Mia Palladino, each winning 10-7.

Lourdes’ Grace O’Conner and Anna-Marisa Dimiskos won their second and third singles matches, respectively, in the 7-0 match.

In the doubles matches, Sarah Sayegh and McKenna Weiss won at first doubles; Carolyn Ogonowski and Erin Carlini captured their second doubles match; Lin Rao and Caroline Campbell were victorious at No. 3 doubles; and Lauren Ennabi and Kaylee Conlan won at fourth doubles.

In the second match, the same OLL lineup returned to the court and all won, with the exception of Palladino beating Morris at first singles and Sam Bucher and Laci Horton winning at fourth doubles for the Warriors.

On Monday, Lourdes shut out Carmel, 7-0, to improve to 9-0.
