One of the brightest high school girls basketball stars to emerge from the Hudson Valley is back on the court.

Our Lady of Lourdes graduate Maddy Siegrist returned from a fractured ankle injury to make her long-awaited college debut with Villanova University on Wednesday night, shaking off the nerves to lead the Wildcats in scoring in a 68-56 loss to George Washington.

“I was so excited to be back out there,” Siegrist told HVSR. “I can’t believe it’s been almost two years since my last game.”

Indeed, Siegrist graduated from OLL in 2018 after one of the great seasons in local girls basketball history – 32.7 points per game and 13.1 rebounds during 2017-18 in leading the Warriors to the Section 1, Class AA finals.

She signed with Villanova after an extensive recruiting process but missed what would have been her freshman year due to the ankle injury.

When she finally stepped on the floor at home on Wednesday night? Butterflies.

“I was a little nervous when I first got in, but after I got acclimated it felt great,” she said.

In 27 minutes, Siegrist scored a team-high 14 points with nine rebounds, two blocks, an assist and a steal.

“I’m so grateful to my coaches at Villanova to have the opportunity,” she said. “I’m glad the first-game jitters are over and now I can focus on the next game and try to get better every day.”
