The college recruitment process for athletes is an interesting beast. There are countless letters and texts and postcards and phonecalls and visits from high-level coaches, usually culminating in an on-campus visit by the athlete.

It’s that last part that gives the University of Notre Dame the greatest homecourt advantage in college recruiting.

The Grotto of Our Lady of Lourdes.

Notre Dame Stadium.

The Golden Dome.

St. Mary’s Lake.

Basilica of the Sacred Heart.

Touchdown Jesus.

There is no other campus like it.

And that’s not us talking.

That’s Mahopac High School softball pitching sensation Shannon Becker.

“When I stepped on campus, the atmosphere is like no other,” said Becker, who announced her verbal commitment to Notre Dame on Sunday. “The campus is absolutely beautiful and does not compare to any other campus.”

Becker has been a phenom since the moment she picked up a softball. Last spring, she led the Indians to the Section 1, Class AA championship game with a 19-4 record – three of the losses coming to eventual champion John Jay-East Fishkill – with 15 shutouts and 369 strikeouts.

She wasn’t just a sensation in the Hudson Valley, either. Becker made national news in May with her perfect perfect game – 21 batters, no hits, 21 strikeouts.

Interestingly enough, she still has two full seasons left in high school. Becker is only a junior but a combination of finishing the process early and getting the overwhelming feeling that Notre Dame was the place helped convince her to make a decision more sooner than later.

“The process it was a very exciting journey. It’s not that I wanted it to be over with because this kind of decision is something that should not be rushed. But when I got on the campus and learned more about the program, it was clear this was the perfect fit for me,” she said. “So, I didn’t need to drag it out any longer since I knew I couldn’t get anything better anywhere else.”

The Fighting Irish softball program has made the NCAA Tournament for 21 consecutive seasons. Becker chose Notre Dame over high-powered, high-profile programs Arizona State, Minnesota, Stanford, Duke, Ole Miss and Syracuse.

“I think Notre Dame is the absolute perfect fit for me,” she said. “I wanted a college with the best education with championship-level softball. At Notre Dame, you get the best of the best in the classroom and on the field, which was what I was ultimately looking for in a school. The culture of the entire college community is something you could only dream to experience. When they say it’s about the people you meet, it sounds cliché but it’s so true.”

Becker said right now her plan is to study Communications, possibly including sports media and television.
