Marist cross country names 2013 captains

POUGHKEEPSIE – The Marist College men’s and women’s cross country teams announced their team captains for the upcoming season on Wednesday.

Junior Erin Thompson (Washington Township, NJ), redshirt sophomore Christine Coughlin (Latham, NY) and sophomore Kristen Traub (Wayne, NJ) will lead the women’s side while seniors Nick Salek (Morris Plains, N.J.), Ryan Scrudato (Westfield, N.J.), Ken Walshak (Babylon, N.Y.) and Billy Posch (Wantagh, N.Y.) and junior David Marthy (Latham, N.Y.) will lead the men’s team.

Coughlin, Thompson and Traub are all returning varsity runners from last year’s MAAC Championship runner-up squad. In 2012, Traub earned first team All-MAAC and first team All-ECAC East honors during the cross country season. All three women hold at least one record in the Marist running record book. Traub holds the top mark for the outdoor 1,500-meter race and has also teamed with Coughlin for the record in the 4×1,500-meter relay and again with Thompson in Distance Medley Relay. Coughlin also ran on the indoor 4×800-meter relay team that owns the school record. Traub is also one of just 22 Marist runners, both male and female, to compete in the USA Junior Championships, which she did this past spring as a freshman.

“I am truly proud to have this trio of fine young women serving as the leaders for this team both on campus and in the community,”  Marist women’s cross country assistant coach Chuck Williams said in a statement. “They exhibit the character and leadership that any coach values when choosing role models for their teammates to follow. This year will be especially important since we add twelve new freshmen to what is already a very young roster.”

The men’s team is looking toward its veteran returners for leadership in 2013. Both Walshak and Scrudato are two of just 20 men’s distance runners in Marist history to have eclipsed the 15-minute barrier for a 5,000-meter race. Marthy also holds records in both indoor 1,000-meter race and the outdoor 4×800-meter relay. Salek and Posch were both members of the 4×1,500-meter relay team that broke the school record with a time of 16:26.39.

“We will look to these men to provide toughness and strong guidance for our team as we tackle the many challenges that are ahead of us,” Marist Director of Cross Country Pete Colaizzo said in a statement.

Both cross country programs open their season at home this Saturday, Aug. 31 with the Marist Invitational at Bowdoin Park. The Red Foxes will be racing against MAAC foe Iona as well as SUNY-New Paltz and Vassar College. The men’s race will begin at 9 a.m. with the women’s race immediately following at 9:45 a.m. Following the races, the Red Foxes will celebrate Senior Day with a special ceremony.
