Red Foxes Drop Opening Round Game To UMBC

POUGHKEEPSIE – The University of Maryland-Baltimore County held Marist College to just two goals in the second half on Wednesday night, and the Retrievers went on to a 14-8 victory over the host Red Foxes in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament.

The contest drew 2,134 fans to Tenney Stadium on the Marist campus, an NCAA record for an opening-round men’s lax game.

Marist took the early lead with goals from Evan Gagne and Jake Weinman in the first three minutes. UMBC came back to equalize but a goal from Jojo Pirreca scored in the final seconds of the first quarter to take a 4-3 lead.

Peyton Smith won the opening face-off of the second quarter, passed the ball to Pirreca who dished it to Jamison Embury for a goal to take a 5-3 lead in the first nine seconds of the second quarter. UMBC and Marist traded a couple more goals and Marist took a 6-5 lead into the second half.

UMBC’s defense shut Marist down in the third quarter while adding four goals. The Retrievers held Marist to three shots on goals.

Back to back goals from Weinman breathed life into the Marist offense as they trailed 11-8 with 6:36. But UMBC was able to score two quick goals to put the game out of reach for Marist.
