Foxes Advance To Semifinals On May 13


WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. – The Marist College softball team swept a doubleheader from Monmouth on Friday, upsetting the No. 1 seed in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference tournament and advancing to the semifinals on May 13.

Marist defeated the Hawks 5-3 in the first game and 6-1 in the second game.

The Red Foxes, seeded eighth, will play an undetermined opponent in the semis next week.

In the first game of the doubleheader, the Red Foxes began the first inning with three scored runs by Caroline Baratta, Sam Freeland and Kayley Coltrain. Monmouth quickly responded by scoring three runs in the bottom of the first inning making the score 3-3.

Marist re-claimed its lead in the top of the second. Freeland earned a sac fly as Hailee Jantorno scored from third, making the score 4-3.

The starting pitcher for the Red Foxes was Calista Phippen. She retired 15 straight Monmouth hitters over a six-inning stretch at one point.

In the  top of the sixth, Coltrain hit a solo home run to extend the Red Foxes’s lead to 5-3. Monmouth loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh, but came up short, failing to score.

Barratta went 2-for-4 with a scored run and a stolen base. Coltrain scored twice.

In the second game of the doubleheader, Marist started off strong with a three-run second and never trailed.

The starting pitcher for the Red Foxes, Meghan Haff retired 10 straight Monmouth hitters between the third and sixth innings. Marist outhit Monmouth, 13-3 including Freeland, Walsh, McDonald and Hunter Hand all with two hits apiece.
