MARIST SOFTBALL WALKS OFF, MOVES ON

Foxes Rally To Beat Iona In MAAC Tournament

POUGHKEEPSIE – Claire Oberdorf tied it with a home run in the bottom of the seventh inning and Kaley Coltrain scored moments later on a two-base error, giving the Marist College softball team a stunning 2-1 walk-off win against Iona in the first round of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference championship tournament.

The Red Foxes will face Monmouth on Thursday morning at 11 a.m. in the next round.

Marist is hosting the tournament.

Calista Phippen pitched three perfect innings to start the game for the Red Foxes, striking out six of the first nine batters she faced. Iona scored an unearned run in the fourth to take a 1-0 lead.

The Gaels’ Kara Zazzaro tossed five perfect innings before the Red Foxes reached base with a Morgan Gianelle single.  Zazzaro retired the first two batters she faced in the seventh, but Oberdorf came up huge with a homer to center field to tie the game at 1-1.

Kaley Coltrain then reached base with a single to left field, and then Gianelle hit a ball to Iona’s shortstop. The Gaels committed an overthrow that allowed Coltrain to race all the way home to give the Red Foxes the victory.
