Red Foxes Move To 2-1 In MAAC Play

POUGHKEEPSIE – Sophomore Maura Fitzpatrick came up big Friday night, and the Marist College women’s basketball team defeated Fairfield by a score of 71-55 in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference game at McCann Arena.

Fitzpatrick led all scorers with 24 points, just one off her career high. Fitzpatrick shot 9-for-15 from the field, 2-for-4 from three-point range, and 4-for-5 from the free throw line.

A pair of Red Foxes – freshman Hannah Hand and junior Kendall Baab – established career highs in scoring with 17 and 12 points, respectively. Hand shot 7-for-11 from the field and 3-for-7 from three-point range. Baab also set career highs in assists (six) and rebounds (five). Baab led the Red Foxes in assists, and freshman Rebekah Hand paced the team with eight rebounds.

Marist scored the game’s first four points on baskets by sophomore Lovisa Henningsdottir and Rebekah Hand, as Fairfield was held scoreless for the first 2:48. Five different Red Foxes scored in the first quarter, as they held the Stags to 25 percent shooting (3-for-12) and led 14-7 after 10 minutes.

Fairfield scored on its first three possessions of the second quarter and cut Marist’s lead to two on two occasions. The Red Foxes responded with a 13-2 run, which included two three-pointers by sophomore Claire Oberdorf. Fitzpatrick finished with 12 points in the quarter, which saw Marist expand its lead at 38-23 after the first 20 minutes. The 24 points marked the Red Foxes’ second-highest scoring quarter of the season.

A 9-0 run propelled Marist to a lead of 21 in the third quarter, and the Red Foxes led 56-37 after three periods. Marist held Fairfield without a field goal for a stretch of 3:57 between the end of the third quarter and start of the fourth quarter. In the fourth, Marist tied its largest lead at 21, and Fairfield never got closer than 14.

Kelsey Carey led Fairfield with 18 points. Casey Smith contributed 13 points and a team-high seven rebounds.

Marist is now 5-8 overall and 2-1 in the MAAC; Fairfield is 4-8 this season and 1-2 in conference play.

Marist will begin a stretch of three consecutive road games on Monday, January 2, when the Red Foxes travel to conference rival Monmouth. Tip-off is scheduled for 2 p.m., and the game will be carried live on ESPN3.
