POUGHKEEPSIE — Marist College women’s basketball star Caitlin Weimar is transferring to Boston University after a strong freshman campaign last season.

Weimar averaged 8.6 points and 7.6 rebounds per game and swatted 38 shots last season, sharing MAAC Rookie of the Year honors. She played through knee pain during the MAAC Tournament in Atlantic City and was an integral part of the team’s run to the NCAA Tournament.

Boston University announced the news on its athletics website

Marist head coach Brian Giorgis declined to comment on Weimar’s transfer.

Giorgis is bringing in three freshmen and Kiara Fisher, a Syracuse transfer, to fill the gaps left by the graduated Willow Duffell and Allie Best, and now Weimar.

Fisher, part of the mass exodus from Syracuse’s program, should figure into the team’s plans right away. The 5-foot-7 sophomore guard played in 10 games for the Orange in 2020-21, making seven of her 11 three-point attempts, and scoring a career-high 11 points against UNC.

Freshmen Catie Cunningham, Siobhan Boylan, and McKenna Rife will all contend for spots in the rotation as well.

Last year, Marist won the MAAC in a season marked by COVID-19 and uncertainty. The Red Foxes were picked fourth in the preseason polls but breezed through the league in what was supposed to be a rebuilding year. Now, with three top contributors from last year gone, the Red Foxes will relish the challenge of mounting another MAAC title run.
