Baseball Team Defeats Chester For Sectional Crown

SAUGERTIES – For the Marlboro High School baseball team, it was just like football – getting back to the place they believe is rightfully theirs.

When the football team lost in the Section 9 championship game in 2016 to New Paltz, they made it a sole purpose to get back to the title game in the fall of 2017 and reclaim the crown.

Mission accomplished last November.

And mission accomplished on Saturday morning for the baseball team.

Top-seeded Marlboro, using last year’s sectional final loss to Rondout Valley as motivation, beat No. 3 Chester, 3-1, at Cantine Field.

The Iron Dukes will play Section 1 champion Pleasantville on Thursday in a regional game back at Cantine.

Marlboro’s win was a terrific pitcher’s duel between Fred Callo and Chester’s TJ Gregory, both of whom were dealing. Gregory gave up one legit run– Eric Grzechowski laced an RBI single in the fourth inning – but an RBI groundout-turned-error by the Hambletonians off the bat of Marlboro’s Brendan Mahusky delivered two runs to make it a 3-0 game.

Chester got one back in the top of the fourth when Johnny Hipsman tripled and scored on an RBI groundout by Sean Murphy.

And that was it for the scoring as both pitches threw two-hitters.
