MARLBORO HAMMERS HIGHLAND

Iron Dukes Have A 50-Point Game In Win

HIGHLAND – It wasn’t a tsunami, with a cascade of water coming all at once.

No, it was worse.

It was more like the constant little drip, drip, drip, drip, drip, drip, drip that builds up over time and drives you insane.

That’s how the Marlboro High School football team beat rival Highland on Friday night. Sure, it was a 56-3 victory that sounds like a tidal wave, but was more methodic.

“We would string together a couple of positive plays in a row but when it came down to it they were able to bully us right back onto our heels,” Highland coach Josh Tatum said.

For example, the second-year coach said that his Huskies opened the game by forcing the Dukes to punt on their first series. But on the Huskies’ ensuing drive, they had the ball stripped on a third-down carry for a scoop-and-score touchdown by Marlboro.

“And that kind of became the theme for the night,” Tatum said.

Gino Mazzella’s second-quarter field goal were Highland’s first – and so far only – points of the season following last week’s 40-0 loss to Goshen.

Marlboro quarterback Christian Diorio threw for 51 yards and ran for 56, including a touchdown. Elijah Williams rushed for 110 yards and two scores. Mahlo Faircloth had a rushing touchdown, seven tackles and an interception. And Fred Callo banged a 33-yard field goal.

“Hats off to Coach (Brian) Beck,” Tatum said. “He’s got his team firing on all cylinders right now.”
