Girls Lax Nips Warwick In Low-Scoring Game

MILLBROOK – Carrie Halpin scored twice, her sister Cat tallied the game-winner, and goalie Claire Martell had a virtuoso performance as the Millbrook High School girls lacrosse team beat Warwick, 3-2, on Saturday.

It was a terrific non-league game and it turned out to be everything you might expect in a matchup of the three-time defending Section 9, Class C champ Blazers and the two-time defending Class B champion Warwick.

Cat Halpin’s goal came with six minutes left, leaving it up to Martell to hold the lead.

The senior made 14 saves to preserve the victory.

“Claire has had many impressive games in the past but today was really something special. Warwick is a good team and she was really able to shut them down today,” Millbrook coach Jillian Barnes said. “After every save when Claire had to clear the ball she faced one or two Warwick players defending her hard and she played phenomenally, keeping composure and making some great long clears to her teammates. She was certainly keeping it a close game and was fun to watch today. I’m so proud of her and how much she gives to this team every game.”

Isabella Astorino and Natalie Daigle scored for Warwick while goalie Grace Haesche made eight saves.
