Millbrook High School has saved its 2021 football season.

The Blazers will merge with Dover for the upcoming year, Hudson Valley Sports Report has learned. Millbrook athletic director Al Hammell confirmed the news and said he expects to send an email to parents and players on Monday.

“We just wanted to be able to give these kids a season,” a relieved Hammell said Friday night.

The news comes five months after Millbrook had to cancel the 2020 season – delayed until the spring of 2021 due to the pandemic – and two months after the school announced it would not have a fall 2021 team either due to dwindling participation.

But at the time, Hammell said he hoped to contact Dover, which also plays eight-man football, about a proposed merger.

“This is something I’ve been working on for months,” Hammell said.

Hammell said Millbrook’s Board of Education has signed off on the plan and that the school will provide a bus to Dover every day for practice and back to the Millbrook campus when it’s over.

Blazer players will have to try out for the Dragons when official practice begins on August 23. Dover athletic director Paul Kenny is also serving as the team’s football coach this season.

“This has been quite the process,” Hammell said. “I’m glad we were able to get it done and get these kids a season.”
