Penny Roberts knows it will be a week filled with tests for her Monroe-Woodbury High School softball team.

But the coach also knows these upcoming games will sharpen her team.

“I am really proud and happy with how the girls are coming together,” Roberts said. “We are now at the mid-way point of the season and they are starting to really find their stride together.”

It looked that way over the weekend.

Monroe-Woodbury improved to 9-2 ahead of Monday’s game against John Jay and Wednesday’s tilt with Kingston by winning the FDR Tournament. The Crusaders beat Pine Plains, in the first round, 13-1, as starting and winning pitcher Sam Ryan threw four innings of two-hit ball and Cymonne Rios tossed three innings and allowed just one hit.

Ryan had two hits and three RBI in the game while Rios had two hits and two ribbies. Madison McGee singled, drove in two runs and scored three times, while Victoria Borowski had three RBI.

In the championship game, the Crusaders beat host Roosevelt, 4-3, again behind Ryan and Rios.

Ryan won it, throwing five innings and allowed four hits, three runs, and striking out seven. Rios got the save with two innings of hitless ball.

Borowski singled and drove in a run. McGee and Nicole Palmer each got a hit and scored a run.

“It has really been a full team effort in each game, which is what we have been striving for as our goal since preseason,” Roberts said. “I am hopeful that we keep this momentum up.”
