Both Teams Beat Millbrook For Titles

STONE RIDGE – A tale of two games, a tale of two teams.

For one, the New Paltz High School boys basketball team, a generational victory – the Huguenots defeated Millbrook on Friday night, 64-43, to win their first Mid-Hudson Athletic League championship in 20 years.

For the other, the Franklin D. Roosevelt girls basketball team, something that is old hat – a second consecutive MHAL title with a 49-41 victory over Millbrook.

That’s how things played out at SUNY Ulster in another championship doubleheader as all four teams now prepare for the Section 9 playoffs.

For New Paltz, this had been coming. This was the fourth consecutive year the Huguenots had won their division and made the four-team tournament, and the third year they were in the championship game.

Patrick Murphy had a double-double with 17 points and 12 rebounds to lead New Paltz, while Justin DeMaria and Jackson Soper each added 14 points. Matt Simmons had nine points and five assists.

Liam Flaherty had a game-high 18 points for Millbrook while teammate Joe Gjidoda added 14.

In the girls matchup, it was close throughout. FDR held a 36-35 lead late in the third quarter but tightened up its defense on Millbrook’s twin towers of Erin and Natalie Fox, while at the same time ripping off an 11-0 run that made it a 47-35 game midway through the final frame.
