NEW PALTZ – Clearly, the boys on the New Paltz and Franklin D. Roosevelt high school golf teams have been playing quite a bit this summer.

Both teams rolled into their 2019 season-opening match on Wednesday playing some terrific golf, and posting scores more suited to a few weeks down the road as the Huguenots beat visiting Roosevelt, 158-166, in a Mid-Hudson Athletic League match.

The contest was played at the par-36 New Paltz Golf Club.

Nick Puleo earned medalist honors for New Paltz with an even-par round to lead the way.

“Boy, he’s good,” Roosevelt coach Kevin Hart said. “He’s the best kid around right now.”

Oliver and Josh Clinton both shot a 40, and Kevin Metzger fired a 42 for the Huguenots.

FDR wasn’t too shabby, either. Michael Bucholsky led the Presidents with a 39. Joe Nesbitt carded a 41, David Remsburger added a 42 and seventh-grader Ike Rothman debuted on the varsity with a 44.

“I was real happy with our score after the first match. We’re young and a little inexperienced but I’m excited about our potential,” Hart said. “New Paltz is just a powerhouse and will be going forward in Section 9.”
