NEW PALTZ TENNIS UPSETS SPACKENKILL

Huguenots Stay Unbeaten In The MHAL With 3-2 Win

POUGHKEEPSIE – It was the Mid-Hudson Athletic League girls tennis match everybody was waiting for, and it didn’t disappoint.

New Paltz High School captured the first two singles matches Monday en route to a terrific 3-2 upset victory over Spackenkill in a tight, competitive match.

The Huguenots remain unbeaten at 5-0 while the Spartans dropped their first match of the season and are 2-1.

Natalie Meyer won at first singles for New Paltz, beating Cynthia Ma, 6-2, 6-4, while Ariana Rodriguez was a winner at No. 2 singles, outlasting Emily Ma 4-6, 6-4, 6-4.

The Spartans Rachel Li beat Emily Wong-Pan at third singles, 7-6 (7-2), 6-3, but New Paltz’s second doubles team of Riley Finnegan and Grace Morrissey wrapped up the team win with a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Nazeen Shah and Shinyee Su.

“This was an outstanding match. The girls were evenly matched, and you can see from the scores that it was very competitive,” Spackenkill coach Jackie Klein said. “All of the girls played excellent tennis today. Congratulations to New Paltz for an excellent match and win!”
